Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a 20-day exciting mountain trip in the North-Eastern Himalayan Region in Taplejung district, bordered by Sankhusabha district (west), Sikkim India (east), and Tibet China (north) Border. This trip is known as Kanchenjunga South Base Camp hiking. The Kanchenjunga Conservation Area (2035 sq km) journey with alpine grasslands, river valleys, temperate and sub-tropical forests topography ranges Thiwa Khola (1200 m) traverse to the third world's highest mountain Kanchenjunga (8586 m) base. The journey commences after the Kathmandu-Bhadrapur flight. 

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek in the non-touristic, untouched, isolated area of Nepal with a strenuous trip to explore natural beauties, 27 community forests, 800 species of flowering plants, 1257 households (6500 people), 30 types of rhododendrons, 48 varieties of orchids, ten species of reptiles, 30 species of mammals including endangered wildlife, red panda, snow leopard, musk deer, blue sheep, Yello-throated marten, rhesus monkey, Himalayan black bear, medicinal plants, ethnic groups of Nepal within the dream Himalaya valley. About 252 different types of birds, including Impheyan pheasant, shy drongo, snow cock, and red-billed blue magpie found in the area. The mountain people, their culture, tradition, and practices of Tibetan Buddhism are impressive to a trekker. The dramatic landscapes of the earth, snow-capped mountains, viewpoints, forests, glaciers, wildlife, medicinal plants, and wildflowers are observable in the trekking trip. 

Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is exciting to interact with friendly Rai, Limbu, Bhotia, and castes communities in the lower part of the trekking. The different flora and fauna are in the region. The trekkers collect photographs of the snow-capped mountains, river valleys, and landscapes. Local people knit baskets and tumplines from bamboo for locals. Read the day-to-day itinerary below.

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu Airport
Our office guide and a car will meet at Tribhuvan International Airport. Transfer to the hotel with a 20 minute drive. Check-in at the hotel and get the program information. Stay overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 02: Day sightseeing in Kathmandu - 6 hours
A professional tour guide and car will pick you up at 9 AM at the hotel. The guide explains all about sightseeing and Nepal's history. You will visit the four cultural UNESCO World Heritage sites. Swayambhunath (1st century) is a Buddhist stupa with Assamese monkeys and panoramic views of Kathmandu Valley and mountains. Kathmandu Durbar Square (8th to 18th century) is the former Royal Palace Squares, museums, Kasthamandap, Living Goddess Kumari, Freak Street, and wood carvings with temple architecture. Pashupatinath (5th century) is famous for the cremation on the Bagmati riverbank, Pashupatinath Temple, temples with Shiva Lingam and Yoni, Hindu holy man (Sadhus), the activity of monkey and deer Sleshmantak forest. Boudhanath (5th century) is the biggest stupa in Nepal, a Tibetan refugee settlement, a painting school, prayer wheels, prayer flags and a monastery with monks.

Day 03: Fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur (93.87 m) - 45 minutes and Drive to Taplejung (1820 m) - 5/6 hours
After a hot breakfast fly from Kathmandu to Bhadrpur for 45 minutes. Afterwards, drive from Bhadrapur to Taplejung for 5-6 hours. Stay overnight in Taplejung.

Day 04: Taplejung to Lalikharka (2220 m) - 5/6 hours
Hike slowly uphill and downhill through a forest of rhododendrons to the ridge. Cross a few streams and reach the pass (2500 m). Descend through a forest to reach Lalikharka. Stay overnight at a camp in Lalikharka.

Day 05: Lalikharka to Kheshewa (1960 m) - 5/6 hours
Walk on terraced fields to Thembewa (1900 m), Limbu village, then ascend a bit of a ridge and descend to Phawa Khola (1430 m). Climb steeply to the Khunjari village (1900 m) then walk through the terraced fields to the Sinchewa Bhanjyang (2125 m) with views of the Kanchenjunga and Kabur. Hike uphill and downhill to reach the Kheshewa village. Stay overnight at a camp in Kheshewa.

Day 06: Kheshewa to Mamanke (1820 m) - 5/6 hours
Descent to a waterfall then crosses several streams. Walk a landslide path to reach the village Pum Pung (1805 m). Walk along with Yampung Village, hike uphill through a forest and descend to the ridge (1850 m). Walk downhill through the Pumpe village and terraced fields to a bridge. Climb a bit and descent to Mamanke. This is a Limbu village. Stay overnight at a camp in Mamanke.

Day 07: Mamanke to Yamphudin (2040 m) - 5/6 hours
Climb uphill, downhill paths to a stream and Chautara. There is a steep valley with a cliff trail. The Kabeli Khola valley is interesting. Yamphudin is a village with mixed ethnic groups such as the Sherpa, Rai, Limbu and Gurung. There are a police check post and the school. Stay overnight at a camp in Mamanke.

Day 08: Yamphudin to Chitre (2940 m) - 5/6 hours
Hike crossing the Omja Khola, follow the Kabeli Khola, and cross a stream. Ascend uphill through a corn and barley field to the Dubi Bhanjyang (2540 m). Descend to the Omja Khola (2340 m) and climb steeply uphill to Chitre. Stay overnight at a camp in Chitre.

Day 09: Chitre to Torontan (3000 m) - 5/6 hours
Ascend to a notch and descend. Climb through a pine and rhododendron forest to the pond at Lamaite Bhanjyang (3420 m) with the view of the Jannu. Walk an orchid-filled forest, with a steep downhill trail to the Simbhu Khola. Walk uphill and downhill to reach the Torontan. Stay overnight at a camp in Torontan.

Day 10: Torontan to Tseram (3870 m) - 5/6 hours
Walk at rhododendron forest and cross landslide to reach the Goth (3360 m) with the Buddhist shrine. Hike uphill and enjoy the mountain in a distance. The climb continues to the Tseram with a large meadow and a house. Stay overnight at a camp in Tseram.

Day 11: Tseram to Ramche (4600 m) - 5/6 hours
Climb uphill through a forest, cross a stream and walk with a rocky path to the Mani Walls with a stone house (4040 m). Enjoy views of the Khabur (6332 m) and Rathong (6678 m). Climb through the Lapsang (4430 m) to a lake. The walk continues to Ramche with a big meadow. Stay overnight at a camp in Ramche.

Day 12: Ramche to Yalung Glacier - 5/6 hours
Hike through a stream, climb to the Chorten (4800 m) with Kanchenjunga South view. You can hike further to the Yalung RI base camp (5400 m) in 2 days if you have time.

Day 13: Ramche to Tseram (3870 m) - 5/6 hours
Walk at the meadow with the lake, then, descend to the next lake at Lapsang (4430 m). Descend the moraine through a scrub juniper to a stream then reaches the pasture of Yalung. Climb downhill along the moraine with the views of Rathong and Kabru to the Mani wall with a stone house (4040 m). Descend through the rocky path, cross a stream; walk through a forest to reach Tseram with the large flat meadow. Stay overnight at a camp in Tseram.

Day 14: Tseram to Lamaite Bhanjyang (3410 m) - 5/6 hours
Walk downhill with the Mountain View to reach the cairns with the prayer flags and the Buddhist shrine. Walk the Goth of Whata and Tsento Kang (3360 m) through a forest of rhododendron. Cross a landslide to reach the Torontan. Walk uphill and downhill Simbua Khola valley with a lush forest and landslide with the view of Jannu to reach Lamaite Bhanjyang. Stay overnight at a camp in Lamaite Bhanjyang.

Day 15: Lamaite Bhanjyang to Yamphudin (2040 m) - 5/6 hours
Walk a pine and rhododendron forest descending and ascending towards the Chitre (2920 m). Descend steeply to Omja Khola (2340 m). Climb uphill a forest to a Pass (2540 m) then, descend through the terraced field with the zigzag trail, cross a couple of times the Omja Khola to reach Yamphuding Village. Stay overnight at a camp in Yamphuding.

Day 16: Yamphuding to Khebang (1900 m) - 4/5 hours
Descend gently to reach the Kabeli Khola (1640 m) then, climb uphill through a steep valley, cross a stream and hike uphill to the ridge with Chorten and prayer flag. Descend steeply to Tenguwa Khola, climb to a ridge and descend to Mamanke village with shop, school and tea shop. Descend to a bridge (1540 m) and ascend steeply to reach Phonpe village. Stay overnight at a camp in Phonpe.

Day 17: Khebang to Khamdime (1500 m) - 4/5 hours
Climb gently to a ridge (1850 m) with few shops. Climb uphill through a forest with a waterfall to Yangpang and Phun Phun. Walk a landslide trail, cross several streams to reach Keswa (1960 m). Hike to the Bhanjyang (2120 m) with Gurung settlement. Climb down through the terraced field to Khunjari. It is a Limbu village. Stay overnight at a camp in Khunjari.

Day 18: Khamdime to Bhadrapur (93.87 m) - 9/10 hours
Descend steeply, cross a bridge over Phawa Khola (1430 m). Climb uphill through the Shimu and Pokara Village. Descend a bit to Thembewa (1880 m). Walk the terraced field to Lali Kharka (2220 m) with few houses. Climb through a forest to the Pass (2570 m). Cross a couple of streams and descend through a rhododendron forest to Suketar. Confirm your flight ticket for tomorrow morning. Stay overnight in Suketar.

Day 19: Bhadrapur to Kathmandu - 45 minutes by flight
Take an early morning flight to Kathmandu with the view of the Himalayan range, village, forest, road, river valley and city. Ride 25 minutes car to the hotel. Stay overnight at the hotel with breakfast in Kathmandu.

Day 20: Departure to Tribhuvan International Airport
Kathmandu airport is 6 km far, which takes 25 minutes car drive. Reach the airport 3 hours before your flight departure. We wish you a safe and happy flight.
