Shivapuri Day Hike is an 8-hour pleasant uphill downhill walk from Panimuhan (1390 m), park headquarters with a 12 km drive from Kathmandu city centre. East and west hiking route to Shivapuri Peak (2732 m) with Nagi Gumba (2330 m) suggests views of Kathmandu Valley, surrounding hills. The hiking commences with national park permits of 1000 Rupees per head for foreigners, 600 Rupees for SAARC, 100 Rupees for Nepali and a compulsory nature guide fee (1000-2500 Rs). The eastern trail is a gravel road at the beginning till the Helipad, then countless stone steps (5000) lead the walking to Shivapuri Peak. Tinchuli (2630 m) with Shivapuri (2732 m) suggests views of Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, Langtang, Gaurishankar, and Numbur on a clear day.
Shivapuri Day Hike explores the freshwater source for Kathmandu Valley. Nagarjun Shivapuri National Park was gazetted in 2002 and 2009 and covers 159 sq km of land (Shivapuri 144 sq km and Nagarjun 15 sq km). The park has four types of forests and harbours 1250 species of vascular plants, 129 species of mushrooms, and 318 species of birds. This park shelters 24 types of mammals, nine threatened, 18 species of Herpetofauna, and 106 species of moths and butterflies. The uphill hike is beneficial to nature lovers near Kathmandu to burn calories. Annual visitors record 2,28,743 in Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park.
Shivapuri Day Trek is interesting for national park walking, bird watching, Kathmandu Valley and mountain views, and a spiritual excursion to Shivapuri and Budhanilkantha. We meet Bagdwar (a source of River Bagmati) and Tinchuli (2630 m) panoramic view of snow-clad peaks. Shivpuri (2732 m) has a statue of Shivapuri Baba, which is sacred to Hindus and Buddhists. This forest was a Watershed and Wildlife Reserve in 1976. Winter temperature remains 0° Celsius, and Summer temperature reaches 30° Celsius. June to September is a monsoon that grows leech. Autumn and Spring will be the best day hike to Shivapuri.
