Nagarjun day hike

Trip Cost: USD 80

Nagarjun day hike offers an exhilarating uphill and downhill journey through Jamacho Hill in the Nagarjun forest, also known as the Queen's forest. To begin the hike, it takes only 15 minutes to drive from Thamel to Phulbari Gate on the Trishuli Road. This gate serves as an entry point to the national park. Covering 5.8 square miles, Nagarjuna Forest in 2009 incorporated into the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. Before starting the hike, visitors must obtain a national park permit. The permit fee is 1000 Rupees for foreigners, 100 Rupees for Nepali citizens, and 600 Rupees for SAARC tourists. An ID card deposit is a must at Phulbari Gate. Nepal military guarded the park entrance and Nagarjuna Palace. As you embark on the steep uphill hike, you will pass through a forest-covered hill, enjoying the fresh air and the melodious chirping of birds. Once, the Buddhist Mahayana philosopher Nagarjuna (150-250 AD) used to meditate in the legendary hill cave.

Nagarjun day hike presents an opportunity to embark on a 10 km journey that involves ascending 745 meters and descending from 1350 meters to 2095 meters above sea level. As you walk along the peaceful forest trail, you will encounter a variety of plants. This hike offers a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu and immerse yourself in a 6-hour walk that showcases breathtaking views of snow-covered mountains and Kathmandu valley with surrounding lush green hills. At Jamacho Hill (2095 m), a view tower provides a vantage point for observing the majestic snow-capped mountains, including Ganesh Himal (7406 m), Langtang (7245 m), Jugal, Dorje Lakpa (6966 m), Gaurishankar (7134 m), and Choba Bhamare (6109 m). Additionally, you can enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding hills of Kathmandu Valley, such as Phulchowki Hill (2765 m), Swayambhunath Temple, Shivapuri Hill (2732 m), and Chandragiri Hill (2550 m).

The annual Jamacho festival, celebrated by devotees on the full moon day of Baishak (April/May), is a significant event. Within a small temple, there is a rock hole that one can enter his hand into and make a wish. Jamacho Gumba houses the revered Padmasambhava statue, while the forested Jamacho Hill is adorned with prayer flags of five different colours and prayer wheels, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity. For a limited time, tourists recommend to hike to the Buddhist Gumba to enjoy breathtaking aerial views of the Kathmandu Valley. In the case of a disabled person, a four-wheel drive refers to Nagarjuna Hill via a gravel road spanning 17 kilometres. The descent to Phulbari Gate takes approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes. Afterwards, ride a 15-minute taxi to Thamel, Kathmandu. If you are interested in hiking booking with a guide and car, please feel free to reach us.
