Ghorepani Ghandrung Trek is a classical, exciting five-day trip (30.82 miles) from Nayapul (1070 m) to Phedi (1080 m) with a drive from Pokhara. The beginner hiking without altitude risk offers 5-6 hours of walking daily to picturesque villages, rhododendron forests, terraced fields, Bhurungdi with Modi river valleys with views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Manaslu Himalayas. The trip requires an ACAP (1992) permit. The former horse water station in Myagdi district, Ghorepani (2815 m), Poon Hill (3210 m) lies 60 km northwest of Pokhara. Poon Hill is a breathtaking viewpoint to observe the sunrise, Kali Gandaki Valley (6993 deep), Dhaulagiri 8167 m (7th), Annapurna 8091 m (10th), Manaslu 8163 (8th), Annapurna South (7219 m), and Fishtail (6993 m). 

Annually, 35,000 foreigners hike to experience lush valleys, ethnic culture, wildlife, 3000 stone steps, waterfalls and suspension bridges. The trekking route owns 20 picturesque villages of Thakali, Magar and Gurung, four bridges, four waterfalls, Poon Hill (3210 m), Deuralis, river valleys, rhododendron, alder and pine forests. Ghorepani to Ghandrung reached in 8 hour's hike to meet Gurkha hometown, Gurung village of vibrant culture, museums, food habits, and great views of Annapurna, Hiuchuli, Fishtail, and Modi river valley. The four-day trek ends in Ghandrung. Five days of hiking continue to Landrung and Dhampus villages.

Floral and faunal varieties in Ghorepani recorded 16 types of rhododendrons (bloom in March-April), Himalayan black bears, pheasants, monkeys, barking deer and domestic animals. Mountain festivals celebrate Toren Lha in Birethanti (March), Tote Parva (March-April, July-August), Jestha Purnima in Ulleri (May) and Kot Maula Puja (October-November).

Trekking Season

September to December (high season) and February to May (low season) are the best trekking season. Rhododendron and orchid blooms in spring. January and February get snowfalls. Mid-June to mid-September held monsoon. Autumn (September to November) weather remains 0° to 17° Celsius, Winter (December to February) -3° to 9° Celsius, Spring (March to May) 2° to 20° Celsius and Summer (June to August) weather stay 10° to 22° Celsius. 

Food and Drinks 

The hygienic Nepalese and Western foods are Dal Bhat, potatoes, chow mein, fried chicken, rice, noodle soup, local wine and pizza. Hot and cold drinks are tea, coffee, beer, coke, cane juice and safe drinking water.  


Take a warm jacket, hat, hiking boots, woollen socks, a T-shirt, camera, rucksack, flip-flop, trekking poles, sun lotion, and sunglasses. Annapurna Conservation Area Project requires a Permit (from Pokhara or Kathmandu), medicine, Nepali Rupee and two pet bottles for filtered water.  

How to Reach Ghorepani

Kathmandu to Pokhara (204 km) is by private car (6 hours), tourist bus (7 hours), and flight (25 minutes). Pokhara has domestic flights from Bharatpur, Nepalgunj, Lumbini, Dhangadhi, Janakpur and Simara. Pokhara to Nayapul (42 km) requires a taxi (1:20 hours) or a local bus trip (2 hours) to start the trek. Private jeep from Pokhara gets to Ulleri (3 hours) and Ghandruk village (3/4 hours). Poon Hill charges 150 Rupees for tourists and 50 Rupees for Nepali visitors.

Trekking Lodges 

Two-bedroom lodges with a small shop, electricity, food, drinks, hot shower, battery charging and Wi-Fi are available on the trekking route. A room costs 300 to 500 Rupees, and an attached bathroom costs 1000 to 1500 Rupees.

Village People 

Friendly Magar, Gurung, and Thakali people from Nayapul to Dhampus run the tea shops. The retired Gurkha also run the lodges. Tourists interact with locals about their villages, culture, seasonal festivals and dress. 

Ghorepnai Hiking Itinerary

Two days - Take a private jeep (3:30 hours) from Pokhara to Ulleri. Hike 5 hours to Ghorepani. Next morning, climb 45 minutes to Poon Hill without breakfast for the sunrise and Himalayas view. Return for a hot breakfast hike 3 hours to Ulleri. Take a 3:30-hour jeep drive to Pokhara. 

Three days - Drive 1:15 hours from Pokhara to Nayapul, hike 3 hours to Hile. The next day, take a 6-hour hike to Ghorepani. Next morning hike 45 minutes to Poon Hill with the world's highest mountain and sunrise view. Return to the hotel for breakfast, hike 3 hours to Ulleri. A private jeep takes a 3:30-hour drive to Pokhara. 

Four days - Hike from Nayapul to Ghorepani in 2 days. Climb 45 minutes to Poon Hill for the spectacular mountain and sunrise view. Ghorepani to Ghandruk reached in an 8-hour walk with scenic mountain views. Day 4, walk 30 minutes to the Ghandrung bus stop. Return to Pokhara in 3-4 hours by the local bus. 

Five days - The five days of traditional walks from Nayapul to Dhampus Phedi are interesting via Ghorepani, Poon Hill, Landrung, and Dhampus village. Afterwards, Phedi takes 30 minutes taxi ride to Pokhara. Day 01: Pokhara (827 m) to Hile (1500 m) - 8.5 km/5.28 miles - 5 hours
The taxi from Pokhara to Nayapul (44 km/27.34 miles) takes a 1:20-hour drive. The driving trip will enjoy scenic views of the Annapurna range, Phewa Lake, villages, and Lumle (1610 m), the rainiest area of Nepal. The hike starts from Nayapul (1070 m) and takes 30 minutes to Birethanti (1030 m). Birethanti is a Thakali town with 13 lodges, electricity at Modi and Bhurungdi riverbank with Mt. Fishtail (6993 m) view and ACAPcheck-post. The hike goes through Bhurungdi Khola Valley to Hile in 2:30 hours. We take lunch along the way. Hile is a Gurung village with terraced fields, seven lodges, electricity, a view of the river valley, and cliffs. Stay overnight in Hile with meals.

Day 02: Hile to Ghorepani (2750 m) - 12.2 km/7.58 miles - 6/7 hours
Hile to Ghorepani scales a 1250-meter ascent. We trek 20 minutes to Tikhedhunga, a suspension bridge with a waterfall view. Tikhedhunga (1525 m) to Ulleri (2070 m) contains 3500 staircases, which take a 1:40 hour uphill walk. Ulleri is a Magar village with tea shops and superb views of Bhurungdi Khola, Annapurna South (7219 m), and Hiuchuli (6441 m). We take an hour uphill walk to Banthanti 2307 m (forest's rest place) with a view of Mt. Fishtail (6993 m). The forest trail walk takes 1:30-hour to Nayathanti (new rest place, 2606 m) with four lodges. Afterwards, it takes 1:30 hour to get Ghorepani (horse water). Ghorepani is in the middle of the rhododendron forest with a lower and upper town (2815 m) and has 15 lodges, electricity and views of Dhaulagiri (8167 m) and Annapurna (8091 m). The rhododendrons bloom in March and April. The fauna recorded Himalayan Black bears, monkeys, and barking deer. Stay overnight in Ghorepani with meals.

Day 03: Ghorepani to Tadapani (2620 m) - 8.1 km/5.03 miles - 6/7 hours
Early morning, take 45 minutes hiking to Poon Hill (3210 m) with warm clothes, torchlight and drinking water. Ghorepani to Poon Hill (it charges 100 Rupees for tourists) is 1.45 km away to the north. The beautiful hill station offers sunrise with the world's highest mountain view, Dhaulagiri (8167 m), Tukuche Peak, Dhampus Peak, Nilgiri South, Twelve-Peak, Annapurna Fang, Hiuchuli, Fishtail, and Manaslu (8163 m). We explore the world's deepest Kali Gandaki Gorge (6967 m deep) and Shikha village. We spend an hour for views, drinking coffee with energy bars. Ghorepani returns in 35 minutes. After a hot breakfast, hike 50 minutes to reach a ridge (3158 m) with Annapurna and Dhaulagiri views. Hike 45 minutes to Deurali (3097 m) with tea shops and Gurung Hill tower. We descend at 1:15 hours to Banthanti (2530 m) with five lodges. We hike 1:20 hours downhill with uphill paths to Tadapani (for water). Tadapani is in a rhododendron forest with a view of Annapurna South, Hiuchuli, Fishtail, and Modi Khola Valley. We stay overnight in Tadapani with meals.

Day 04: Tadapani to Landrung (1565 m) - 10.9 km/6.77 miles - 5/6 hours
Today, we hike 45 minutes from the world's largest rhododendron forest to Bhaisikharka with two hotels. We descend through a forest trail to Ghandruk village at 1:50 hours. Tadapani to Ghandrung has 6.5 km distance. Ghandruk (1940 m) is a Gurung village in terraced fields with a view of Annapurna, Fishtail, Landrung and Modi River valley. We hike downhill and uphill with Modi Khola bridge (1400 m) to Landrung in 2:15 hours. Landrung is a Gurung and Brahmin village with seven guesthouses with electricity. It offers a great view of Annapurna South and Modi Khola Valley. We stay in Landrung with meals.

Day 05: Landrung to Pokhara via Phedi (1080 m) - 9.9 km/6.15 miles - 7/8 hours
Today, we walk to Phedi. First, hike 50 minutes to Tolkha village (1700 m) with six lodges and an Annapurna South view. We climb 1:15 hours uphill to Dhampus Deurali (2100 m) with a teashop, Dhaulagiri and Annapurna view. We descend 35 minutes from a rhododendron forest to Pothana village (1900 m) with Annapurna and Phewa Lake views. Check out the trekking permit and hike one hour to Dhampus village (1650 m) with the Annapurna ranges. The hike takes 1:30 hours to Phedi. We take 30 minutes taxi to Pokhara (16 km). Stay in Pokhara with a breakfast.
